Former Resident Visas
The Former Resident Visa is a permanent visa designed for applicants who spent most of their time in Australia as a child as a permanent resident, or who have completed service in an Australian defence service.
Visa Criteria
The applicant can apply under either the long residence or defence service category:| Long Residence Applicant |
Most people would apply under this section - the main requirments are to show that you:
- Have spent the greater part of your life before the age of 18 in Australia as a permanent resident; and - Have not acquired Australian citizenship during this time; and - Have maintained close business, cultural or personal ties with Australia; and - Are under 45 at the time of application. |

This is an infrequently encountered type of application - you would need to show that:
- You have completed 3 months continuous service in the Australian defence service; or - Have been discharged before completing 3 months because you were medically unfit for service because of the service they completed. |
You and all migrating family members will also need to meet health and character requriements for grant of the visa.
Duration and Conditions
Results in the grant of a permanent visa with full work and study rights in Australia. The travel facility is valid for 5 years.Do I apply in Australia or Overseas?
