NZ Citizen Family Relationship Visa
NZ citizens who have not settled in Australia prior to 26 February 2001 are not considered "eligible NZ citizens" for the purposes of sposnoring family members for spouse visas and child visas.
The New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship visa was introduced to allow NZ citizens to bring close family members with them to Australia.
This is a temporary visa, and does not result in permanent residence, but the visa conditions are quite generous.
Visa Criteria

The applicant must be a member of the family unit of an NZ citizen. This would mean either:
- A spouse (defacto or legal marriage); or - A child; or - Other family member who is financially dependent on the NZ citizen |
| Special Category Visa | The NZ citizen must either be in Australia as the holder of a Special Category Visa, or will be the holder of this type of visa on entry to Australia. Special Category Visa is generally issued automatically to an NZ citizen on entry to Australia. However, if the NZ citizen has health or character issues, they may not be granted a Special Category Visa. Accordingly the NZ citizen may be requested to provide health & character checks ahead of grant of the visa. |
Note that no formal sposnorship is required for this type of application.
Duration and Conditions
Results in the grant of a temporay visa with full work and study rights in Australia. The visa is valid for 5 years.The visa can be extended providing the holder has not become a member of the family unit of another person. If applying outside Australia, the holder would need to show either that they have been in Australia for at least 2 of the 5 years, or has close ties of benefit to Australia.
