Sport Visas

 

The Sport Visa is a temporary visa designed for applicants who compete at the national level or higher. It is designed to improve the quality of a sport in Australia through participation in high-level competition and training with Australians.

Visa Criteria

There are two broad streams of eligibility:

Participating in Specific Sporting Events

The visa applicant must be coming to Australia to participate in a sporting event, or series of sporting events, in one or more of the following capacities:

  • As a competitor in a sporting event - either individually or as a member of a team; or
  • As a person assisting an individual or team competing in Australia; or
  • As a judge or adjudicator for a sporting event; or
  • Is coming to Australia as part of an agreement between Australia and an overseas government

Sponsorship is required in the above situations where the proposed stay is over 3 months.

Coach, Players, Instructors, or Participants in a Training Program

To qualify for a sport visa on this basis, the applicant must be coming to Australia as:

  • A coach, player or instructor for an Australian team; or
  • To participate in a training program in Australia

For the above activities, sposnorship is required in all cases.

Other Criteria

Applicants must also meet public interest criteria, must intend to comply with any conditions imposed, satisfy special return criteria, and have complied substantially with last visa held if application is made onshore.

Duration and Conditions

Results in the grant of a temporary visa for up to 2 years. Condition 8107 must be imposed in all cases - this will exclude any work apart from that specified in the application.
