Working Holiday Makers 'Pathways' to University in Australia

Acacia Education Australia, 8 January 2010

Often working holiday makers hoping to extend their stay in Australia find moving onto an Australian student visa their most achievable visa option. A student visa allows you to stay in the city of your choice and comes with 'multiple entry' in and out of Australia for the duration of the visa; is valid for the entire period of your course; allows you to work twenty (20) hours per week during semester and unlimited hours during semester break; and can sometimes be used as a transition visa to permanent residence through partner visas; skilled visas or business sponsorship.

The Australian education system consists of seventeen qualifications that allows students, both domestic and international, to build up their qualifications as their needs and interests develop over time (see Australian Qualifications Framework - AQF). Many working holiday makers want to obtain University degrees to further their careers and better their chances for migration to Australia. However, after investigating their study options, they often choose to enrol in university `pathway' programs for some of the following reasons:

1. Ineligible for direct entry to University: All University courses have specific academic and English Language Proficiency entry requirements for international students. For students who initially don't meet these requirements, completed study in programs at Diploma level will generally meet both the academic and English entry requirements to move onto University study

2. Ease your way back into study: Often study in a one-year, lower level program is considered more desirable for those who haven't studied formally for an extended period of time

3. More affordable option: The tuition fees for Diploma programs are generally significantly less than for a University degree, thus providing an affordable study option whilst you save for your University program

4. Opportunity to experiment: Commitment to a one-year program only provides the opportunity to try a particular field of study with minimal risk and financial outlay

5. Lessen duration of University course: Many Universities recognise completed Diploma qualifications in particular fields, allowing students to articulate with full credit transfer. This means that completion of a Diploma program may be counted towards your Bachelor degree, enabling you to commence studies in the second year of your degree.

These fields include studies in the areas of accounting; business; children's services; community welfare; electronics technology; financial services; hospitality; information technology; marketing; nursing and tourism.
