The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has issued a new media release announcing that the pass mark to qualify for EOI - SkillSelect (Subclasses 189, 190 and 489) will be 60 points from 1 July 2012 instead of the current 65 points.

The pass mark for current General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas, which will remain open until 31 December 2012, will remain at 65.

Example of POINTS TEST current system and new EOI system:

  • AGE: 30 points - age between 25 and 32
  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE ABILITY: 10 points - assuming that an applicant has proficient English skills (minimum of 7 in each of the 4 bands of IELTS)
  • QUALIFICATIONS: 15 points - applicant has a recognised Bachelor degree
  • AUSTRALIAN STUDY: 5 points - applicant has completed qualifications closely related to their nominated occupation taking at least 2 years of study in Australia

    TOTAL SCORE: 60.

Since the current pass mark for General Skilled Migration is 65, this applicant would need to get an extra 5 points under the current rule. However, under the new SkillSelect program the same applicant would be eligible to lodge an EOI with 60 points.

If you think that this change would make a difference in your case, please contact us at Acacia and we will review your visa eligibility.
