Final SkillSelect Round for 2020/2021 Financial Year

Results have now been released for the final invitation round of the 2020/2021 financial year, with some big jumps in invitation numbers for certain occupations.

The combined total of 660 invitations is an 81% increase on the number of invites sent in the January 2021 round, with 500 of those for a Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa and 160 for the Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Family Sponsored) visa.

The minimum points score for the 491 visa remained at 65 points, however, the 189 minimum score shot up to 80 points. The most recently lodged EOI for a 491 was from March 2021, while the most recent EOI for a 189 visa was dated in July 2019 - almost a 2-year wait for an invitation!

Pro-Rata Occupations

Two of the pro-rata occupations received invites this round:

Accountants, Auditors, ICT Business and System Analysts, Software and Applications Programmers, and Computer Network Professionals did not receive a single invitation in the 2020/2021 financial year Applicants in these occupations should consider alternative options including State- and Employer-Nominated applications.

Crunching the Numbers

According to the Occupation Ceiling table, those who received invitations this round included:

  • 206 General Practitioners and Resident Medical officers;
  • 117 Registered Nurses;
  • 74 Mining Engineers;
  • 73 Industrial, Mechanical, and Production Engineers;
  • 41 Veterinarians (only recently added to the priority skilled migration list);
  • 22 Social Workers (the first invitations this financial year); and
  • 21 Other Engineering Professionals.

The balance invitations were sent to Medical Laboratory Scientists, Other Medical Practitioners, Internal Medicine Specialists, Medical Imaging Professionals, Environmental Scientists, Other Natural and Physical Science Professionals, Psychologists, and Geologists/Geophysicists/Hydrogeologists.

Changes Ahead

Changes to occupation lists, planning numbers, and State Migration programs typically occur on 1 July with the new financial year. Intending migrants may wish to wait until July to assess their options under any new directives or requirements.
